The Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, has signed a three-year pact with Germany’s Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC) to promote international computing research.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between QCRI and the BBDC will promote collaboration via the exchange of research, academic materials, faculty and research scholars. Under this new agreement, QCRI and the BBDC will conduct joint meetings for both education and research as well as establish new research projects.

QCRI’s Executive Director, Dr. Ahmed Elmagarmid, described the Berlin Big Data Center as a global leader in the area of big data and data analytics.

“QCRI is looking forward to building a solid international partnership and sharing technologies in the fields of AI and Data Science,“ Dr. Elmagarmid said.

Prof. Dr. Volker Markl, Director of the Berlin Big Data Center added: “Bringing together the best minds in Big Data and Machine Learning from QCRI and the BBDC will help us to jointly tackle today’s and tomorrow’s grand challenges.”

Established in 2013, the BBDC is one of two big data competence centers operating in Germany. It is officially located at the Technische Universität Berlin and has numerous partner academic and research institutions from the Berlin metropolitan area. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), whose goal it is to support research in the intelligent use of large-heterogeneous data in Germany.
