Research Focus at QCRI

Dr. Jisun An is a scientist at Qatar Computing Research Institute. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, the UK in 2015. Her study was financed by EPSRC, and she was also an honorable recipient of a Google European Scholarship. Dr. An conducts interdisciplinary research connecting computer science, journalism and public opinion. Her Ph.D. was devoted to studying news sharing on social media, and recently she has been focused on applying statistical methods and machine learning techniques in capturing public opinion from social media. She has been a member of the PC of major computer science conferences, including ICWSM 2012-17, WWW 2016-17, and SocInfo 2014-17.

Dr. An's research interests are in the area of computational journalism and opinion, in particular the media's influence on opinion shaping. The research she does is highly interdisciplinary, which only can be achieved by combining theoretical foundations, computational methods and massive computing capability.
